This Bio-sketch is for my daughter Matilda, she is the dancer - MATILDA S. C. MACKEY – Bio-sketch – May 2013 A native of St. Louis, Missouri, and half Italian, Matilda is a 14 year old who has been dancing since the age of 2. She trains at the Nolte Academy in Coralville, Iowa, under the direction of founder and artistic director Leslie Nolte, ballet director Grace Snider, and staff choreographers Tad Snider, Emily Loya, Analia Alegre-Femenias, Christyn Scimeca, and Sean Kaminski. Matilda has trained with guest artists such as Fletcher Nickerson, Melissa Thomas, Leslie Peck, Amy Allen, George De La Pena, Armando Duarte, Eloy Barracan, Kourtni Lind, Kyla Wedenko, Missy Ridgway, Sabrina Madison-Cannon, and in Rome, Italy, with the artistic director of Arte Studio Danza, Mariangela Pesce. Moreover, she has also enjoyed training with top instructors and choreographers during her Summer Intensive Programs at Joffrey Ballet School NYC, and Alvin Ailey. She receives formal training in Classical Ballet (2003-present), Contemporary Ballet (2006-present), Pointe (2008-present), Modern - Graham based (2005-present), Modern - Horton based (2009-present), Contemporary (2008-present), Lyrical (2007-present), Jazz (2002-present), Tap (2002-present), Hip Hop (2003-present), Musical Theater (2005-present), Pilates (2005-present), Partnering (2007-present), Composition (2009-present), and Improvisation (2009-present). Matilda has just this year started choreographing her own solo pieces. Matilda has danced in Ballet Productions of Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland and eight continuous seasons in The Nutcracker. She has enjoyed many roles in these Ballets and performed as the lead characters Caterpillar (in Alice) and Clara, Dew Drop Fairy, Snow Queen, and the soloist in the Marzipan, Russian, Spanish, and Chinese scenes in the last five Productions of the Nutcracker. She has been selected for the role of the Autumn Fairy in the Spring 2013 Ballet, Cinderella. She has also performed in the Theatrical Production of Schoolhouse Rock-Live in 2008, at the Englert Theater in Iowa City, Iowa. Matilda has danced in Modern Dance Productions such as "Letters to Our Mothers and the Chrysalis - a Journey of Transformation and Growth", produced by Oxygen Contemporary Dance led by artistic director and choreographer Fletcher Nickerson; "On the Move - a Dance Concert Featuring Both Choreographed and Improvised Work” produced by Poetic Rebound Performance Company and the Nolte Academy; “Texting Beth” presented by the Nolte Academy for the inauguration of the Coralville Center for Performing Arts; “In the Axis - An Evening of Local Contemporary Dance” presented by Poetic Rebound Performance Company; “Modern Dance Gala 2012 - A Summer Tribute to Modern Dance” presented by the Nolte Academy. She performed as the Wood Nymph in Henry Purcell’s Opera “Dido and Aeneas” presented by The Crescendo Children’s Chorus and The Eventus String Ensemble conducted by John Macfarlane. She has been part of the Nolte Performing Company “AFFECT” since she was 7 years old and she is now in her 8th season in competition. In this role, Matilda has been the recipient of numerous titles, awards and scholarships. She is a member of the Producer’s Dream Company (Cathy Roe’s Performing Company), a member of the Hall of Fame All Star Team, a Performing Company of Hall of Fame Dance Challenge, and was a member in the former ASPIRE Dancers In Company. Matilda has been attending Summer Ballet and Modern Intensive Programs since she was 11 years old. In 2010 she attended both the Ballet Intensive and the Jazz/Contemporary Intensive Programs at Joffrey Ballet School in NYC; that made her the youngest dancer accepted into the Summer Jazz/Contemporary Program since its institution. In Summers 2011 and 2012 she attended the Summer Intensive Program at Alvin Ailey where she was accepted into the highest level for her age division (12-15 years old, pre-professional) both years. In Summer 2011, she also completed a two weeks Intensive Workshop at Steps on Broadway in NYC. This Summer, 2013, she will attend the Joffrey Los Angeles Intensive Program to which she has been awarded a full tuition scholarship. Matilda is a lover of music and has received formal piano and voice education at the prestigious Preucil School of Music in Iowa City; she has also played violin in the school orchestra and clarinet in the school band. She has participated in many outreach performances bringing the joy of dance and music to the elderly in nursing homes and to young children in elementary schools. She has performed in singing and dance concerts to support fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and has been involved in Flash Mob Dances as part of the “Summer of the Arts” activities organized by the University of Iowa Departments of Arts and Dance. Matilda loves visual and language arts and has gained recognitions and awards for her drawings, poems, and stories. She is an avid reader, loves school, her friends, and traveling. She is bilingual and writes and speaks fluently in Italian. Her main goal in life is to fulfill her desire of becoming an accomplished professional dancer and to share her talent and passion with audiences of every age and background.
