I study dance at West Star Dancers. I take Contemporary, Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Pointe, Tumbling and Jazz classes, yet Contemporary is my favorite. I have been dancing for 14 years (since I was 3 years old.) I would like to acknowledge my dance teachers, Erika Slack & Pam Hoaglund. I have been Erika's student for as long as I can remember and I am also her assistant. It took us two rehearsals to finish my solo in the video. We work really well together and I tend to pick up dances quickly.
One of the greatest benefits of participating in competitions is that you get to do something you love in front of people that are bigger in the dance world. At competitions you have the opportunity to be critiqued by someone other than your dance teacher which opens your mind to constructive criticism. Conventions are again great for getting in front of other choreographers and teachers to show them your abilities and talent. You get to dance all day which is really fun!
When I was younger and working on one of my solos, Erika Slack told me to imagine that I was stepping onto a blank canvas, and as I danced I was creating a beautiful piece of artwork. I have used that as my inspiration ever since. I hear the music and the art begins to flow.
In the future I would like to be a Physical Therapist for sports (mainly dancers) and a Choreographer/Dance teacher.
