I am 13 years old. I began dancing at the age of 18 months in upstate New York. I started by taking recreational classes there until we moved to South Carolina where I continued 1 year of recreational classes and by the age of 5 joined a dance company called Columbia City Jazz under the direction of the artistic director Dale Lam.
I study all type of styles of dance from ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary and lyrical all from the many teachers at our dance studio, professional dancers and guest choreographers that come to our studio or at dance conventions. My favorite styles of dance are contemporary which allows me to express myself in many forms, and hip hop when I feel the beat of the music as it enters my body, makes me feel great, and want to start moving.
I would like to thank all my dance teachers--Ms. Bonnie Boiter-Jolly, Mr. James Schuller, and Ms. Ashley Evans for always pushing me to be better than before. Most importantly I would like to thank Ms. Dale for all her guidance and understanding and always making me a better dancer everyday mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Ms. Dale choreographed my solo "The Walk." She is always amazing to work with even more so as I get older and have a better understanding of what she wants and needs from me. She even allows for my input of what feels good and what doesn't.
I feel that dance conventions are an amazing opportunity for dancers to get to know other dancers for long term friendships, for making contacts with professional choreographers for the future, and to learn so many different styles of dance to be a well-rounded dancer. Being able to perform on stage allows me to open up and be me and not be afraid to perform in front of an audience.
My future plans are to become a professional dancer, actress, model in either LA or NYC.
Thank you Harlequin Floors for the scholarship and also The World Dances. This will help out with dance greatly.
