My name is Barbara Perdomo and I am 14 years old. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old. I didn't pick dance as a hobby or a sport to try out -- dance picked me. It's difficult to explain...it's a force from within, it's a part of me and does not let my body be still. I have been a company member for The Miami Dance Project under the direction of Ms. Barbara Delgado and Mr. Noel Gonzalez since 2005. I also attend the Magnet Dance Program at Coral Reef High School and I am a Junior Varsity Cudette. Throughout the years, I have been training in all styles of dance including contemporary, ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, etc.
I have been competing for many years with my company but had never ventured out on my own. Earlier this year, my mom told me about the Young Talent Big Dreams competition and I decided to leave my comfort zone and audition.
My experience after that audition has been mind blowing. Living in the little bubble that is the dance world, I had no idea the level of talented peers that exist in my community in all areas of the arts. I was so humbled and privileged to meet them and to have shared the stage with them. Needless to say, being the overall winner was the most unbelievable feeling in the world for me. Whenever I compete, I never do it with the expectation of winning, that has just been a bonus. I don't get stressed worrying about that because my main goal is to have fun, express myself through my art and entertain the audience. The rest works itself out.
As for my future plans, I want to continue to train and grow as a dancer during the next 4 years of high school, work very hard on my education which has, is and always will be my #1 priority, and enjoy every minute of my high school experience. And if by the time I am 18, it is still around, my dream is to audition for So You Think You Can Dance.
Thank you for selecting my video as the winner for the August Judges’ Choice Award. I was truly surprised and very happy.
