Meet Victoria Wong - August 2013 Judges’ Choice

Thank you so much for selecting me to be the August video contest winner! I am so honored and deeply humbled by the Judges' Choice Award! I'm grateful that the judge's took the time to view my video and select me as one of their winners!

I am 16 years old and I have been dancing for almost 10 years now. I mainly dance ballet, but I have some jazz, modern, and contemporary training. I started pointe 4 years ago, and I love it! It's one of my favorite parts of ballet. My coach, Miguel Campaneria, made me realize how much I truly enjoy dancing.  I have been studying under him for the past 3 years. He has brought me to the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) and World Ballet Competition (WBC) in the past 3 years, and he has taught me so much. Last year, I won first place for my pas, Grand Pas Classique, at the Tampa Regionals of YAGP, and we were invited to compete in the NY Finals. It was my first pas de deux at the competition, and I was so nervous. I had so much fun though! My partner, Chandler Proctor, and I were great friends, and we became even closer through our experiences rehearsing for YAGP. Miguel would coach us several times a week on our pas, and even though we were working long hours, I enjoyed it because I was always having fun! I also competed with two solos as well in the Senior Category at YAGP. I received top 12 in the classical category. In 2011, I received 3rd place for my Contemporary Solo choreographed by Rickey Flagg at the Tampa Regionals of YAGP, as well as top 12 for my classical solos. Competition was a really great experience for me because it allowed me to meet and interact with new people. I loved performing onstage even though it was so nerve-wracking. Once I got onstage, I just focused on the choreography and danced my heart out, trying to convey the passion I felt for dance to the audience. I plan on going to more competitions this year as well. Hopefully I will do even better this year! This past summer, I attended the San Francisco Ballet (SFB) Summer Intensive Program. It was an amazing experience, and I had so much fun! I met so many new people and have made friendships that will last a lifetime. The teachers were wonderful, and they helped me to improve so much! It was awesome going to a different school and learning from different teachers. Seeing all the professional dancers at SFB inspired me to work even harder to perfect my technique. Just as a last note, I want to thank my parents, sister, and Miguel for supporting and guiding me every step of the way. Without them, dancing would not have been possible. They never stopped believing in me, and I just wanted to say that I love them so much, and I'm so incredibly grateful to have them in my life.
